New programme called WorkWell is helping patients stay in work or move closer to employment

A new programme called WorkWell is now available to patients registered at our practice. The service offers free, one-to-one support for people whose health, confidence or personal circumstances are affecting their ability to work.

We spoke to Dawn Farey, Personalised Care Lead at South Peterborough Primary Care Network (PCN), about how the programme is making a difference to the people referred into it.
“WorkWell can support patients who feel that something in their life is getting in the way of work,” Dawn said. “That might be a health condition, anxiety, life pressures, or a loss of confidence after time away from employment.”

The programme is open to registered patients aged 18 or over who are currently working and finding it difficult to cope, are off sick, or are unemployed and want support to move closer to work. A diagnosis or benefit status is not required.

Dawn explained that people are often referred because they are unsure how to speak to an employer about their health needs, feel overwhelmed about returning to work after illness, or need practical support with CVs, job applications or building a routine. Others may be experiencing financial pressures or personal challenges that make work more difficult.

“Sometimes it’s about confidence,” Dawn said. “Sometimes it’s communication with employers. For others, it’s about understanding what adjustments might help them stay in work safely. There’s no pressure, no set agenda and no judgement. WorkWell is completely voluntary and works with patients on the things that matter to them.”

Support may include personalised employment coaching, return-to-work planning after sickness absence, guidance on workplace adjustments, advice on managing health conditions, job search and interview preparation, and signposting to services that can help with housing, finances, mental health or wellbeing. Most patients are contacted within one to two weeks of referral, and urgent cases may be prioritised sooner.

Patients can self-refer directly by visiting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority website and completing a short form. Alternatively, they can speak to a GP or a member of the Personalised Care Team, who can make a referral on their behalf.
