Weight loss medications on the NHS like Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®)

Important information for patients

From 23 June 2025, the NHS is making new weight loss medications available to a limited number of eligible patients. These treatments include Tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro®), alongside other medicines approved for managing obesity.

These medications are not available to everyone. Due to limited NHS resources, only patients who meet strict eligibility criteria and are at highest risk of obesity-related health issues will be prioritised.

Who is eligible?

To be considered for an NHS prescription of a weight loss medication, such as Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®), you must meet all three of the following criteria:

1. Have a BMI over 40

Check your BMI using the NHS calculator.

2. Have been diagnosed with four out of the five following health conditions:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)

3. Have an assessment with a GP at our practice.

What to do before contacting the practice

To help us assess your eligibility more quickly:

  • Please make sure your height, weight and BMI are up to date in your medical record. If your practice has a Health Kiosk, you can use it to record this. If not, you can check your height and weight at home and call the practice after 12 noon with the details.
  • Log in to your online medical record to check if you have four or more of the health conditions listed above. You can do this using the NHS App or SystmOnline.
  • Read more about NHS weight loss medication options, including Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) to help decide if they may be suitable for you.

What to expect at your appointment

If you think you meet the criteria, please book an appointment with the practice.

At your appointment, the GP will:

  • Confirm whether you meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Assess whether weight loss medication is appropriate and safe for you

If eligible (and depending on your local Integrated Care Board pathway) you will either:

You will also be offered diet and lifestyle support, which you must participate in to continue treatment.

If you're not eligible

If you do not meet the current criteria for NHS weight loss medication, we can still help.

Our social prescribing team can support you in accessing local services, resources, and healthy lifestyle advice tailored to your needs.

The eligibility criteria for NHS weight loss medication may change in the future. We will update this page if NHS guidance is updated.

Please help us prepare by ensuring your height, weight and BMI have been checked and recorded in your medical record.

Private prescriptions

We cannot issue private prescriptions for weight loss medications.

If you access medication privately, the private provider is responsible for your prescribing and monitoring.

Please ensure your private provider has your full medical history and a list of current medications.

Additional advice for patients using contraception or HRT

Contraception

Weight loss medications such as Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) may affect how your body absorbs the contraceptive pill.

If you take oral contraception, please use another method (such as condoms) for extra protection.

You can also contact us to talk about alternative contraception options.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Tablet forms of HRT may be less effective when taken with some weight loss medicines. You may want to consider switching to patches or gels that absorb through the skin. You can contact us to talk about which option is right for you.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
