Fit Note pilot scheme launches in South Peterborough PCN
A pilot scheme, launching in South Peterborough, means First Contact Physiotherapists will be able to issue fit notes to patients with musculoskeletal problems, streamlining the process for patients and saving GP appointments for those with more complex issues.
The scheme, which starts this month, is being implemented by South Peterborough Primary Care Network at its GP practices, including Yaxley and New Queen Street and Stanground.
A First Contact Physiotherapist is an experienced physiotherapy practitioner working within Primary Care who is qualified to assess and manage patients without a prior referral from a GP.
All of South Peterborough PCN's First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs) have undergone training to prepare for the scheme, and, as well as doing Fit Note reviews, they will also be able to direct patients to Workwell, a free service that those with health challenges that affect their ability to work.

Hayley Leckie, the PCN’s Digital and Transformation Manager said: ‘This initiative is a pilot study to take some of the pressure from GPs by directing people to our First Contact physiotherapists, who often see people whose condition means they are unable to work. It also supports the work of our Social Prescribing team as they also signpost to Workwell, a valuable local service for those who are unable to work or need additional support due to their health needs.
'Our FCPs are trained, engaged and raring to go. We will assess this project by patient satisfaction levels and also by seeing how much GP time is freed up through this pathway. Our reception teams are also being trained to refer eligible patients to the physiotherapists and Workwell, so it is about sending patients to the most appropriate source of help.’
