Enhanced Access Service

We're here for your evenings and weekends Banner

From Saturday 1st October 2022 the existing Extended Hours and Extended Access services will be amalgamated into a new Enhanced Access service.

The new service will see local GP practices (Primary Care Networks) working together to offer patients evening and weekend appointments – that means you will be able to access a GP, nurse or other health professional at a time which is more convenient for you.

Why is a new enhanced access service approach needed?

The new arrangements aim to remove variability across the country by putting in place a more standardised and better understood offer for patients. It provides an opportunity to develop a better blend of appointments including taking advantage of digital platforms, facilitating convenient access for patients and flexible working for staff.

Introducing a more multidisciplinary offer means patients can access a broader set of services including screening and vaccination.

Primary Care Networks (PCNs) will be required to provide enhanced access appointments between the hours of 6.30 pm to 8 pm Mondays to Fridays and 9 am – 5 pm on Saturdays.  As enhanced access will be delivered at a PCN level – not every practice has to be open during these hours.

Practice core working hours will remain the same, however, there are appointments available to patients outside of these hours on a book in advance basis.  These appointments will be offered across the PCN practices, and you will be advised at the time of booking where your appointment will be.  As the practice may not be physically open during these hours, patients will be unable to have general queries answered or dealt with during enhanced access opening times. Please be aware, your appointment may be a telephone call, video call or a face-to-face appointment but again, you will be advised at the time of booking.
